Indonesia, an archipelago of wonders, is home to some of the most breath-taking landscapes and vibrant cities in the world. Today, I embarked on an unforgettable journey aboard the Argo Bromo Anggrek train, taking me from the bustling capital of Jakarta to the historic city of Surabaya. In just over eight hours, this luxury train crosses rice paddies, volcanoes, rivers, and charming towns - offering a spectacular travel experience...
Welcome to Jakarta, a sprawling metropolis and home to over 33 million people. Despite its chaotic streets and urban intensity, Jakarta offers pockets of calm and beauty, from historic landmarks to modern shopping malls. My journey began at Gambir Station, the city’s main hub for long-distance trains. Getting started was straightforward but worth noting: if you’re a foreign traveller, you’ll need to collect your boarding pass at the station. The process is simple - scan the barcode from your ticket confirmation at a kiosk, and you’re good to go.

As a Luxury Class passenger, I had access to a private lounge - a serene space with plush seating, complimentary snacks, and drinks. It’s the perfect retreat before boarding. From the decor showcasing Indonesian railway history to the efficient boarding process, the experience was seamless and well-organised.

Once on board, the first thing that struck me was the thoughtful design of the Luxury Class coach. It’s laid out in a 1+1 configuration, with individual suites featuring reclining seats that nearly flatten into beds, complete with blankets, eye masks, and entertainment systems. Each detail is carefully considered - there’s ample legroom, storage for luggage, and even a small cupboard by your seat. The friendly staff welcomed me with a refreshing drink, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

The Argo Bromo Anggrek connects Jakarta and Surabaya along Java’s northern mainline. Covering 720 kilometers (447 miles), the journey includes just four stops: Cirebon, Semarang, and Bojonegoro among them. As the train pulled out of Gambir Station, the views quickly shifted from Jakarta’s urban sprawl to lush green fields, winding rivers, and distant volcanoes. This is Java at its most picturesque.

Midway through the journey, meal service began. The food was decent - spaghetti with chicken dippers and a quirky coffee-flavored dessert. While it won’t win culinary awards, the effort and complimentary service are appreciated. There’s also an onboard dining car offering additional snacks and drinks for purchase.

Luxury Class is undeniably the highlight, but I also ventured into the Executive Class coaches. These seats are spacious and comfortable, arranged in a 2+2 configuration with reclining leather chairs. The dining car and prayer room are functional and clean, adding convenience to the experience.

Each stop adds a touch of local charm. In Cirebon, nicknamed “The City of Shrimps,” the historic At Taqwa Mosque catches the eye right from the tracks. In Semarang, the capital of Central Java, we passed the majestic Istiqomah Mosque. Even brief glimpses of these cities’ landmarks were enough to spark curiosity about future visits.

We arrived in Surabaya a few minutes ahead of schedule, pulling into Pasar Turi Station at 4:23pm. Often overshadowed by more famous destinations like Bali or Yogyakarta, Surabaya is an underrated gem. Its rich history, vibrant culture, and affordable accommodations make it a city well worth exploring.

The Argo Bromo Anggrek is more than just a train ride - it’s a luxurious, comfortable, and immersive way to experience Indonesia. The attentive service, relaxing atmosphere, and scenic views make it a standout among long-distance trains in Southeast Asia. While flying might be faster, it can’t compare to the charm and comfort of this journey. Whether you’re a train enthusiast or simply looking for a unique travel experience, the Argo Bromo Anggrek in Luxury Class is an absolute must. Have you ever taken a train journey in Indonesia?
